Over the last five years, Shadows professional support services has played a significant positive contribution to the quality of life of vulnerable residents and their families who are often isolated, marginalized and because of their condition unable to participate in various community activities. It has also played an essential role in tackling the discrimination that accompanies a mental health diagnosis, offering a solution focused environment for people to grow and eventually move on.
Shadows provides various Support services with in between support available via telephone, text, email, social media, various social gatherings and events. In addition, a Drop in/ Crisis centre operates once a fortnight on a Friday (Pre Covid) manned by experienced volunteers.
As of January 2020, Shadows provides a mobile service, arranging to help and support people who cannot make it to Shadows on the days and evening Shadows are open.
Shadow’s has been supporting the local GP practices and their patients with Mental Health Support , parents with young families, farming community, sporting community and any other people who may require Access to Shadows Professional Support Services .
Shadows Professional services deliver a mental health awareness presentation to the local organisations and businesses to help promote asking for help, how to access help and support, preventing stigmas, know how to support someone with mental health difficulties. To show that supporting someone doesn’t have to be overcomplicated .

Shadows is unique in that it connects people at the point when they most need help, there is no waiting around to be referred, or reliance on external resources as the users themselves are the enablers in the project. This mutual self -help culture has positive effects and implants a belief that living well is possible with the right kind of approach and understanding.
Shadows have built up strong relationships with local GP practices, Police, DWP, Local Community Mental Health establishments , Local County Councillors, local wellbeing therapy services and other support organisations in the area.
Learning and raising awareness of emotional well-being is a core element of the project’s work and normalising and mainstreaming “mental health” into everyday life is key.
Speakers are regularly invited to attend group sessions with participants encouraged to access training and learning opportunities where appropriate.
The project’s development in terms of good practice, is monitored on a regular basis by the facilitators, and is modified accordingly on what works and what is less successful and enabling for its’ users, which is also reflected in the issuing of review forms .
Since its inception the demand for Shadows has increased dramatically.
We provide a wide range of support service :
• Extended current service as a direct response to the needs of its users – Shadows Facilitators are available for support daily (9am – 5pm). Providing Group sessions and one to one session when where required.
• Mobile Shadows – Visiting business / organisations and people in their own community settings to provide group / one to one support when they are unable to attend Shadows at a designated setting.
• Providing wellbeing courses
• Advocacy
• Signposting / Liaising with other support Services
• Increase learning and awareness, raising opportunities on “mental health” thus minimising stigma and “normalising” it’s effects in the process.
• Visit and deliver more mental health awareness presentations to group settings.
Examples include:
• Available to visit various settings across South and West Wales
• Accompany people who struggle to attend appointments and act as their advocacy to ensure they are not being exploited and are being listened to.
• To be able to work with various businesses and organisations to promote mental Health awareness and prevention of stigmas – Delivery of Mental Health Awareness presentations to group support settings
• Provide a welcome information pack to all clients with all the relevant information of Shadows and services it provides, Included in pack:
• To provide alternative well -being therapies on assessment and when all other avenues have been explored.
• Working alongside other support networks to enable to client to receive the best possible support and outcome to their recovery
• To provide the necessary courses to educate and equip members and their support network with the necessary information and coping skills and strategies to be able to understand and manage and hopefully recover from their illness that can be mentally and physically debilitating such as wellbeing, CBT, Depression Busting , Confidence and assertiveness building etc.
